Just thought I'd mention a point about that skin lightening thing... Asian women, especially south-east asian women are prone to a skin condition called melasma that causes dark spots on the skin, especially on the face. (I work in a pharmacy specializing in dermatology, is how I learned this). It is exacerbated by sun exposure (of which there would be a lot in these countries). While there might be some women who want overall lighter skin, mostly they just want to get rid of the darker spots and even out the skin tone. Cats look great in patches, women don't feel so good about it, and that has nothing to do with the media - it's a long-entrenched thing. So don't feel quite so bad about all those skin-lightening products - they're response to a demand that was there long before global conglomerates and marketing.

Though I agree that Unilever is being quite two-faced about the whole thing...

Claire - This is a great post and illustrates the true potential of merchandise for cause related organizations. Thank you for writing about this. Unfortunately, most nonprofits create generic, corporate designs that are neither creative, nor compelling to their supporters. Worse off, they don't tell the personal stories of the people who are passionate about that particular cause. As the CEO of Audiolife, the music industry's leader in eCommerce and merchandise fulfillment, I've been able to oversee hundreds of thousands of artist's merchandising programs. The ones who succeed are those who create items that emotionally resonate with their fan base. After a personal experience with my family, I decided to leverage all of my experience in the music industry and start a new company that was exclusively focused on nonprofits. That company is GoodThreads (www.goodthreads.com). We help nonprofits increase donations and awareness for their cause by selling personalized merchandise. We're just getting started but have major plans to rollout the service more broadly in 2012. Hopefully by this time next year, several of the 'top 10' designs will be created from the GoodThreads community. :)

All the best,
Brandon Hance

Second of all, are any real thoughts actually 'restricted thoughts'?

Keep up the great work--you have a new follower.

At the risk of sounding cliché, I have to say my late Bubby. If she could risk everything, I could risk a cliché.

A Holocaust survivor, she fled the Nazis, was rescued by someone pretending to "save" her, fled Nazis again, reunited with her husband, saved her children's lives, endured and overcame. Most of all, though it wasn't her first language, she taught me English as a little girl, and taught me that I have two knees [pronounced KA-neez], which I proudly told my class at school. Yeah, they laughed at me, but to this day, I speak of my KA-neez with great pride. Thanks to my Bubby.
